"I've Had Dealings With Badgers - They're Fucking Mental." - Twenty Questions With Absolute Power's Russ Russell

Of course, he's not just an ace metal guitarist - he's one of the genres' leading producers too. But can he do a Hospital Corner? Read on to find out...

Who are you, and what do you do?
Russ Russell, Extreme Producer and Guitarist for Absolute Power

Where are you?
In the studio as usual, its my hideaway from the rest of the world.  Working on the final mix of the new Napalm Death album.

What will the next food that passes your lips be?
Probably whatever is stuck in my moustache - or i've got a tin of stupidly hot Chilli Peanuts over there, they're looking pretty good right now.

If we’re speaking to you, it may well be because you’ve got something to sell – tell us a little about it.
After five years or more working on it we've finally released the debut Absolute Power album.  Because everyone in the band plays in other bands or is producing albums, like me and Simon (Efemey - AP vocalist), its taken such a long time but it was well worth the wait, we're all really chuffed.

What’s the best thing about being in your band?
I get to hang out with my mates and make music that puts a massive fuckin grin on my face.

And the worst?
That we dont do it often enough - but thats about to change.

Where would you most like to perform that you haven’t already been to?
Well i've been several times with other bands but Absolute Power should definitely play Japan, we all love it there, i think we plan to to go via Malaysia and Singapore and do Australia too while we were out there.

Was it a bad thing for Judas Priest to appear on American Idol?
Judas Priest can do whatever the fuck they like, they've earned it.  I actually didnt know they did that, fair play to them, it must have a million times better than any of the other shit on there, maybe it turned a few more people on to metal - great!

Who or what first alerted you to the fact that you’d like to be a musician?
I listened to alot of music from a very early age but the first time i remember thinking "I wanna do that" was while watching the old Top of the Pops shows, amazing performances by Bowie, (Marc) Bolan, Roxy Music, they really excited me and made me air guitar and leap around the room, cant have been more than about 5 years old.

Who would win in a fight between a badger and a baboon? Why?
I've had no dealings with Baboons so i dont know their form but i've tangled with a Badger and they're fuckin mental, i dont fancy the Baboons chances really unless it was tooled up, them badger claws are like Wolverine's blades...

Motley Crue or Nirvana?

Both had their charm, neither changed my life

A genie grants you 24 hours as a member of another band – who do you join?
Oh fuck thats a hard one - I guess to be Jimmy Page and play with Zeppelin at Madison Square Garden would be pretty mindblowing - or a more up-to-date one would be Mastodon, I'd fuckin' love to jam with those guys.

Are Cds a dead medium for music delivery?
Hmmm... Diminished but not dead, they said the same for vinyl when CD came out, digital releases are convenient and have of course affected sales but real music lovers will always like to have something in their hands, a cover to read through while you listen to the album. We are planning a special vinyl release for Absolute Power, the artwork will look amazing that big.

Only a fool comes off tour with less money in his pocket than he started with. Discuss.
Hahahaha! well then i am that fool - i've done it loads of times, its all about seeing the world and enjoying yourself not saving every penny, i have the memories and they are priceless!

What sort of music can you absolutely not abide?
Glee.

Which of your songs would you like the cast of Glee to record?
I'd write a special song for them to sing called Kill Us All Now (Slowly and Painfully).

What one item of non-musical equipment can you not do without on tour?
Bunk sock.

Can you do a Hospital Corner?
Do a what?  Is that some weird fetish thing?  I've never tried it, but i'd try anything once.

Here’s one last chance to spruik your band/tour/album... What else should we know about it?
Absolute Power - if you love Dio, Priest, Saxon, Sabbath then you'll love it - album out now on all popular digital downloading sites, hopefully vinyl coming soon.
