'Australia has some truly fantastic and talented bands!" - Looking back at the year that was with Voyager's Simone Dow.

The talented six-stringer looks back at 2012 with Metal as Fuck...

Hello Simone - it's very kind of you to spare the time and get involved with our end of year festivities! Question number one - what was the best new album you heard in 2012? "Wow, that is really hard. I got into a lot of really awesome new EPs and albums this year. Some standouts for me were David Maxim Micic’s Bilo 2.0 EP, Chimp Spanner’s All Roads Lead Here EP,  Meshuggah's Koloss, Gnosis by Monuments, Daylight Dies' A Frail Becoming, Weather Systems by Anathema and The Contortionist's Intrinsic. I’ll leave it at that!! haha!

It's a good list, to be sure. And what about old stuff – did any reissues grab your attention this year? "Well, I know they have been getting released since late last year, but the Death re-issues!! Such an amazing band."

Indeed so! Hats off to Relapse for seeing that project through! Changing tack slightly, What was your non-musical highlight of the last twelve months? "Music is pretty much my entire life and has been the highlight of my last 12 months so apologies, I can’t answer that one!!"

No worries. We;ll get back to the subject in hand then! Do you think the music scene – and our sort of music in particular – is in good shape at the minute? "Definitely, I honestly think Australia has some truly fantastic and talented bands and especially in the metal/rock scene. It would, however, be nice to see a bit more variety as we seem to be spewing out a LOT of heavier bands. I’d like to see some more melodic, and progressive metal bands pop up!"

Well, variety is the spice of life, isn't it? Bearing in mind you think the scene is pretty healthy at the moment, did anything disappoint you musically in 2012? "Just the normal things that bother me. Horrible TV shows like X Factor, Australian Idol, Australia’s Got Talent etc turning music into a popularity contest and marketing nightmare. These shows just present people who want to be famous rather than doing something that they truly love. And  they have a bunch of untalented morons judging it. Yeah, maybe I should stop now (laughs)

We couldn't agree more. Death to untalented morons! Let's starve them of the oxygen of publicity. But talking of talent, which we now are in a roundabout way, which practitioners of your own musical role impressed you most this year? "I stumbled across a few new awesome young guns. David Maxim Micic, Jakub Zytecki and Paul Ortiz from Chimp Spanner. Of course, I can’t go past Guthrie Govan, who I always blast for pure bliss."

You can't beat a gobbet of Govan, that's for sure! How about the best live act you’ve seen this year? Name names! "Meshuggah at Soundwave were absolutely mind blowing, but watching Rhapsody of Fire smashing out a flawless set for 17 dates when we toured with them in North America was very impressive."

Yes - that does sound rather special. To the future now, or at least 2013... What do the next twelve months hold in prospect for you? "The brand, spanking new video clip for Voyager’s track The Meaning of I was released last month, and we've been on our East Coast tour in support of our latest album The Meaning of I. For 2013, we are looking at touring, touring and more touring and finishing off writing album number 5 (which we’ve already written half an album of material for). To sum it up, Voyager will be very busy in the next 12 months!

Good news, good news... So apart fom yourselves, then, which band, if any, do you think is primed to break out into the wider consciousness in 2013? "I’m hoping to see Tesseract come out and totally smash it with their new album and new singer. If the new track Nocturne is anything to go by, then I could be right!!"

We'll keep an eye on the Tesseract situation then - fingers crossed! We’re fast approaching the festive season - best night for a party – Christmas Eve or New Year’s Eve? "Definitely New Year’s Eve!"

You're the first person we've spoken to that's said that! And, now, to finish up - Anything else you like the readers of Metal as Fuck to know? "Thanks for all your support this last year Metal as Fuck!! And also a big thanks to all the Voyager fans. Be sure to check out our new video clip for “he Meaning of I and keep your eyes peeled to our facebook page for all the latest news."
