'The Music Scene is Currently in a Good Place!" - Kvelertak's Erland Hjelvik looks back at 2012...

2013 is shaping up as a bumper year for the well regarded Norwegians, but we thought we have a look back at 2012 first...

Hello Erland, and welcome to our massive 2012 retrospective, 'My 2012'... thanks for being part of the festivities! Our first question for you, as ever -what was the best new album you heard in 2012? "Smoke Mohawk's Viva El Heavy Man."

Short and to the point. Thank you. And what about old stuff – did any reissues grab your attention this year? "The old album of the year for me was Blue Öyster Cult - Fire of Unknown Origin".

Oooh, nice choice - Veteran of the Psychic Wars often gets a run out at MaF HQ. But no-one wants to hear about us. Back to you - What was your non-musical highlight of the last twelve months? "It’s the total polar opposite of “Metal as Fuck”, but I started jogging when I had some time off and managed to  lose some weight, (laughs). It’s made playing live-shows a lot less exhausting, so I hope I can keep it up!"

(Moving slightly to the left to block from view a variety of junk food wrappers and empty beer cans) Good for you! Keeping fit is something we wholeheartedly endorse! And talking of getting into shape...Do you think the music scene – and our sort of music in particular – is in good shape at the minute? " Yeah, there’s been alot of good releases like Converge - All we Love we Leave Behind, Graveyard's Lights Out, Purified in Blood - Flight of a Dying Sun, Nettlecarrier by Nettlecarrier, Enslaved's Riitiir, Turbonegro - Sexual Harassment, Harmonicraft by Torche and so on, so it seems to me that the music scene is currently in good shape!"

Can't argue with any of those names you've listed there, Erland, but did anything disappoint you musically in 2012? "The new Witchcraft album was pretty lame compared to the old ones."

Moving away from releases and on to people, which practitioners of your own musical role impressed you most this year? "Tony Sylvester from Turbonegro for stepping into the role as lead singer as smoothly as he did, I saw them live when we played with them at the Rockhard Festival in Germany, it was awesome, I even think he managed to make the old songs sound better!"

Is that possible? We;ll take your word for it! Best live act you’ve seen this year? "It’s a cointoss between Graveyard and Converge, though it’s two completely different bands who are both amazing in their own way."

And back to you, and Kvelertak - What does the next twelve months hold in prospect for you? "Releasing our new album and shitloads of touring!"

That's good to hear - don't forget how easy it is these days to gaet down to Australia! Which band, if any, do you think is primed to break out into the wider consciousness in 2013? "Kvelertak (laughs)."

I guess we have to allow you a bit of shameless plugging, right? We’re fast approaching the festive season - best night for a party – Christmas Eve or New Year’s Eve? " On the second day of Christmas, we have this tradition where we play our favourite bar in Stavanger, Checkpoint Charlie, it always turns into a huge crazy party. New Years Eve usually always end up being disappointing!"

And finally, anything else you like the readers of Metal as Fuck to know? "Please stop wearing kilts."

I guess we did ask...
