Woods of Ypres - IV: The Green Album (Earache/Riot)

Unrelentingly soul-destroying, the Canadian quartet's fourth offering (even as a re-release from 2009) is a slab of innovative yet infinitely intriguing doom metal depression.

Interestingly, Woods of Ypres seem like a band that merely stands on the shoulder of giants upon initial listens.

Written with Black and White - Oliver Palotai of Kamelot

A German in an American band fronted by a Norwegian, Oliver is used to keeping an arm's length from the usual. He spoke Metal as Fuck about his passion for the keys, Kamelot's new album and how he'd "bankrupt the band in half a year" if he was trusted with show bookings.

In heavy metal history we hear endlessly of guitarists, bassists, drummers and vocalists – who was the greatest? Who are our favorites? Which one do we try to emulate in our own playing?

The Original Power Metal Maniac – Michael Weikath of Helloween

It was the odd intervention of the metal gods with technology while talking to Michael Weikath, the founding guitarist and one of the fellow "fathers of power metal," Helloween. Talking from his home in Tenerife, Spain, he sat down for a few cups of coffee and a very long conversation with Metal as Fuck.

Helloween according to many fans, journalists and associated hangers on are the “founders” of power metal as we know it.

Baroness: Out of the Blue

For Baroness, it's all about evolution. But will the fans follow the band out of their own brand of primordial, sludgy ooze?

Sometimes a certain scene seems to blow up thanks in part to the meteoric success of a few bands that come to define a particular region’s trademark sound or, once in a great while, transcend

Dimmu Borgir - Abrahadabra (Nuclear Blast/Riot)

Abrahadabra is another worthy string to Dimmu Borgir’s ever burgeoning bow and with the sidestep that was In Sorte Diaboli, can be considered as the next musical step after Deathcult Armageddon. There is a great maturity in the songwriting, and they have managed to make use of the Orchestra. No doubt they will have learned many things in the process - and I, for one, eagerly anticipate what they will do next time.

With all the recent turmoil within this band, from ejecting members, threats of legal action over ownership of material involving said previous members, newly announced members leaving in a heartbe

Soilwork - The Need for Strid

Bjorn “Speed” Strid is the consummate metal vocalist. As frontman for the long running Soilwork he’s been around the world flying the metal flag for over fifteen years. He talks to Metal as Fuck about new records, family and, surprisingly, hockey.

Soilwork vocalist Bjorn “Speed” Strid posesses an unusual name.

Chesapeake Bay area Death Metal - Dying Fetus

Sean Beasley, the low frequency pusher of the mighty Dying Fetus talks about the unlikeliest place to hold a death metal festival, their storied history and of course everyone’s favorite subject – politics.

Having just finished their tour with the legendary Napalm Death, Dying Fetus conquered Australia with the ferocity and aplomb a grind band should wield, planting their flag in almo

System Divide - The Conscious Sedation (Metal Blade/Riot)

And now for something completely different..well, perhaps not completely different but certainly a pretty exciting variation on some tried, tested and often a bit tired formats.
Release Date:
14 Sep 2010 - 8:30am

Some people will press play on The Conscious Sedation, and dismiss it as yet more generic deathcore within thirty seconds of openedr Vagaries of Perception.

Mister Misanthropy - Galder of Dimmu Borgir

There's been upheaval in Dimmu Borgir and Metal as Fuck is on the case, investigating the new album, ramped-up sound and what fans can come to expect with only a three-piece line-up.

Black Metal (BM), it seems has almost run its course as the tabloid news' whipping boy du jour; a cult-like, evil and all-destroying force that terrorizes normal "folk" is too hard to resi
