Devin Townsend Project w/ Periphery - Sydney Round House 24 October 2015

I am still in the clouds....

I’ve heard mentions of otherworldly, spiritual awaking and unearthly; these were just some of the words used to describe Devin Townsend’s performance at Sydney’s Round House over the weekend. The fact of the matter is, The Devin Townsend Project is an apparition to many and it was evident that both ‘HevyDevy’ and the crowds shared a connection this night. Prior to being thrown into the buoyant world of our Ziltoidian overlord; the audience kicked off the night with Washington locals, Periphery, who wasted no time in riling up punters with an extremely solid set, engaging fans with a mixture of chaotic yet well structured tunes. This was my first time sitting in on a Periphery show and I was impressed with their devotion to their music and retaining their union with the crowd..... Hats off for some of the best sound work I’ve heard in a long time. Hearing every precise note, every subtle change in the guitars and every smash of that cymbal really brought the entire package together.

Devin Townsend has been a master of the heavy arts for decades and had the audience elated with his charm and on occasion ‘Dad humour’ showcasing a plethora of hits from the band’s most cherished albums including; Z2   (Blue Skies & Dark Matter) and the third ever live performance of The Death of Music from Ocean Machine. The entire set was flawless, wrapped in silk and dipped in silver; The Devin Townsend Project was a smooth operator and with the beginning of each song; several hundred faces lit up. This is the first concert I’ve been to where I felt an obvious urge to spark my lighter and hold it high above the crowd (and well, why not - there was no other use for my lighter that night) I thought this undertaking was just a myth...

Devin Townsend notably appeased the crowds, with his humble unassuming self and sent us into an abstraction of soothing masterpieces; we were just part of the canvas. This music that is so well crafted and just so ‘Devin Townsend’ it’s hard to not get caught up in this peculiar character. Devin Townsend is one of few who can get you to climb out of your shell for just long enough to witness the true beauty he has to offer....
