The Devin Townsend Project @ The Triffid, Brisbane 20/5/2017

There's no ecstasy like a Devin Townsend gig...

Oh, the people you'll meet at a juicy, banging gig. For instance I ran into dear sweet ex-MAF editor Scott Adams and his charming wife for a couple of pre-gig beers - which was nice. We ambled down to The Triffid only to be horrified by the massive queue of punters that stretched right up the road but we ducked into a near-by pub for some refreshment thus allowing the line to die down a bit. Right! Time to get into the venue...

It was heaving, hot and sweaty in The Triffid, a fantastic air-craft hanger/large shed type venue where I caught the tail-end of sleepmakeswaves beautifully composed proggy insturmental set; I was particularly impressed with their drummer, Tim Adderley, who played a set so tight I honestly thought the band had a drum machine instead of an actual human bean. Given Devin's drug-free stance it was kind of ironic that there were so many people off their nuts getting about the place with eyes like saucers and twitching jaws. Good luck to 'em, I say...

Devin hit the stage and we all went totally fucking mental. Rejoice, Stormbending and Hyperdrive destroyed me, as did Mr Townsend's typical self-deprecating banter. Then there was Ziltoid Goes Home, Supercrush! and March of the Poozers (as well as some other top tunes thrown in). Some how I squeezed my way up to the front where a sea of people swayed and bobbed like a human tempest - and, rather bizarrely, I was asked to offer some kind of protection to a pregnant woman who thought that this was a good place for her to be. Naturally I did what I could under the circumstances but it was fucking mental in there...I was having way too much fun so I had to step outside for a minute to cool off where I met some other delightfully freakish people. Ih-Ha!, Bastard and Higher finished the set and it was a weepingly beautiful time and far too short a set - I think another two or three hours would have been just right. Too much Devin is never enough. Props also to new mum Tori who was having her first night out after giving birth to her daughter. Bless.
