The Weekly Ticket Stub... Or Thereabouts

This weeks edition of the ticket stub involves heavy metal bands, fancy that!

U.S. techincal death metallers Decrepit Birth have revealed the first in-studio video, in which they discuss the recording process for their fourth studio album, "Axis Mundi", out on July 21st via Agonia Records (Europe / ROW) and Nuclear Blast Records (North America).

Watch the video here

Formed in 2001, Decrepit Birth released three studio album's to date, which got them a premiere spot on the death metal radar. Their music, infused with technical and progressive twists, managed to forge a very solid international fan base, and continues to forge their path into the future, as one of the genre's finest bands. Awakening from a seven-year slumber, the Californians fourth offering is entwined with musical athleticism and characteristic esoteric themes. "Axis Mundi" is as crushing as it is cosmic.

"We’ve gone through an evolution throughout the years" says founding member and primary songwriter Matt Sotelo. "The last couple of albums we had, Diminishing Between Worlds and Polarity, were more progressive death metal. They were different from …And Time Begins, which is a different genre of death metal. It’s more brutal. I’m the type of guy who likes to experiment. …And Time Begins has no solos. It’s all really fast palm-muted riffs. The other albums breathed more with the guitars. I let chords ring out on Diminishing Between Worlds and Polarity. Axis Mundi is combination of all the stuff I’m into. I like it a lot right now. It’s more melodic. The riffs repeat intentionally. I want to have fun with these songs".

With "Axis Mundi", the band are  blasting the doors of convention wide open, paving the way for future generations to explore beyond death metal’s four proverbial corners. Much like the band’s influences from the early ‘90s, Decrepit Birth have different optics on the genre and what it has meant and continues to mean. Of course, Sotelo sees "Axis Mundi" from an entirely pragmatic viewpoint:

"I don’t know if we’re going to re-shape death metal" he counters. "We’re just a band. We’re doing this. We’re fans of the genre. We do our own thing with it. It’s our own paint job. What sounds cool to us. We don’t aspire to be the most technical band out there. The technicality isn’t our main goal. Technicality is part of what we are. When we were writing this album, we wanted the songs that had riffs that repeat. There’s more structure with our new stuff. We’re trying to write good music. We want to entertain people out there. Hopefully, everybody likes Axis Mundi".

The album was recorded at three different studios over the course of a year. The clarity, the power, the musicianship, and the brutality aren’t vying for attention. They’re in absolute harmony. The guitars (tracked by founder Matt Sotelo at his home studio) are razor sharp yet spine-snappingly heavy. The drums (tracked by Ryan Forsyth at Private Ear Studios in Winnipeg, Canada) are genre-defining, recalling what Sean Reinert, Gene Hoglan, and Steve Flynn did for Death and Atheist, respectively. And the bass (tracked by Sean Martinez, also at his home studio) has a great deep-end against the ceaselessly wicked rhythms. Tracks like "Hieroglyphic", "Spirit Guide", and "The Sacred Geometry" wouldn’t have crushed skulls and blown minds if it wasn’t for the accomplished mixing and mastering of Stefano Morabito at 16th Cellar Studios. The icing on the cake is the astonishing cover artwork that was made by renowned fantasy artist Dan Seagrave (Morbid Angel, Entombed, The Devil Wears Prada).

Life Is Noise Publicity is proud to announce that Hiboux have locked in dates for their upcoming Australian and New Zealand tour, taking their entrancing instrumental post-rock to selected venues across June and July.

With New Zealand’s post-rock scene becoming more and more prominent every day, Hiboux recently broke forth with an epic volume to the country’s musical history with Command The Earth To Swallow Me Up, released in March of 2017. The album flows upon ears as naturally and gracefully as water from a mountain stream falling into the sea – important to note the same can be said about their cunning use of key changes and transitions.

Hiboux have taken extra lengths to make sure that the versatile spirit of the music transfers from album to stage seamlessly, investing years in chasing the perfect sound for their debut record. Making a conscious effort to make the record sound ‘live’, guitarist Bern Stock confesses that he spent upward of a year and a half carefully engaging with his pedals and amps to create a tone that masterfully fluctuates between stampeding heavy segments and floating lighter moments, all the while remaining truly unique to the band.

Hiboux’s open, encompassing sound is something worth experiencing live – the spirit of the music provokes a trance like concentration out of the listener and needs to be felt first hand. Make sure you witness these shows through early June through to late July while you have the chance.

Catch Hiboux at one of the following dates:

Friday June 2 - Space Academy, Christchurch

Saturday June 3 - Re:Fuel, Dunedin

Saturday June 10 - Wine Cellar in Auckland

Saturday July 1 - Valhalla in Wellington

Thursday July 20 - Frankie's Pizza, Sydney

Friday July 21 - The Townie, Sydney

Saturday July 22 – The Last Chance Rock & Roll Bar, Melbourne

Tickets available from the venues.

Along for the ride on all dates is Melbourne's razorsharp deathmetal legion Blackhelm

In anticipation of their ucpoming new album "Unparalleled Universe", iconic U.S. detah metallers Origin have recorded a series of in-studio videos, in which they discuss the album's recording process. The second in-studio video, featuring guitarist and founding member Paul Ryan, can be viewed here

The recently announced new album "Unparalleled Universe" will be released on June 30th via Agonia Records (Europe / ROW) and Nuclear Blast Records (North America). Earlier the band revealed the first single, "Accident And Error", in the form of a 360 degree lyric video, available here

For 20 years, Origin has engaged a full-blown sensory assault of tight, taut, and technical death metal amplified by flashes of grindcore and groove. However, 2017’s "Unparalleled Universe" sees the quartet - Paul Ryan (guitar, vocals), John Longstreth (drums), Mike Flores (bass, vocals), and Jason Keyser (vocals) - strengthen that blueprint with a handful of surprises.

"It feels like an Origin album, but it’s unparalleled to what you might expect if you haven’t heard us for 10 or 15 years" says Ryan. "To me, it’s a true reflection of ourselves. I compare it to an action movie. Our earlier material is filled with action from beginning to end. Now, the idea is to add a little more depth and dynamics. You could say there are some twists in the plot musically".

Origin began compiling ideas for what would become "Unparalleled Universe" while touring in support of their 2014 sixth offering, "Omnipresent". Along the way, the record snatched their highest position on the Billboard Heatseekers Chart, bowing in the Top 10. Meanwhile, it garnered acclaim from metal press and successful tours with everyone from Aborted and Exhumed to Immolation and Marduk over the last three years.

"We would ask the audience to give us title ideas, but we could never discern what they were actually saying" laughs Ryan. "Riffs typically start on tour, and I keep them in my back pocket. That’s the way it is. Ultimately, Unparalleled Universe begins another era for Origin. In the end, we’re still writing death metal songs, but we’re adding new dimensions. We’re still Origin".

After shaking the foundations of the Melbourne metal community with their debut album release Get in the Ground, Blunt Shovel are back with a vengeance for another run of shows through Victoria this June. Shot on location at Goatsound Studios, the hilarious new video features a who's who of the Melbourne metal scene, and paints an awkward yet amusing picture of what live music audiences have succumbed to in the modern age.

Not content with slowing down, this is a band on a mission to destroy with brutal and intense riffage for fans of old school and new school death metal alike. Their live shows are garnering a reputation as some of the wildest Melbourne has seen and their growing audience is testament to the hard work and dedication the band has shown in their short existence. Art As Catharsis are proud to announce the first, untitled single from Omahara's similarly untitled new album. Omahara are a Tasmanian group who play dark, hypnotic, ritual drone. Their music is quiet and isolating - influenced by the ancient expanses of their island home.

Each track stems from an improvisation reflecting a particular psychological landscape, in which the individual is annihilated and the listener is invited to vanish into themselves.

Omahara will be playing at the opening of Dark Mofo 2017

Whitey McConnaughy directed the clip, continuing the partnership that birthed videos for “Wires,” “Prehistoric Dog,” “Hank Is Dead” and most recently “Shadows”. In the “Cut It Short” video, McConnaughy explores the inner dynamics of touring bands with hilarious accuracy.

Red Fang commented on the video: “Hey! We made a new video with our buddy Whitey, the director of such hits as "Prehistoric Dog," "Wires," "Hank is Dead," and "The Big Lebowski." It's a real hoot of a riot! Come inside, where you will discover that after 12 years of being crammed in a van together, it is remarkable how little we get on each other's nerves, push each other's buttons, do anything annoying, bicker, or really ever fight at all! We especially don't throw guitars and cymbals at each other because that would be wrong.”

Only Ghosts is out now!

Melbourne tribal psychedelic outfit AlithiA will be embarking on a 23-date European tour with Norwegian prog-rockers Leprous and Iceland’s Agent Fresco throughout October and November. The band will be touring in support of their second album which was recorded in Athens, Greece at the end of 2016 and is due for release in October.

The production of AlithiA’s sophomore record was backed by the support of their fans, raising over $10,000 in their Pozible crowdfunding campaign. Recorded at Artracks Studio in Athens, Greece, the record was produced by London based Daniel Sandor.

Frontman John Rousvanis comments: "We’re thrilled to be returning to Europe and exploring a lot of new territories on this run. We feel honoured to be joining both Leprous and Agent Fresco whose unique sounds have had a major influence on us.“

Oh/Villain are about to take their first steps into a wider world, and are today offering up the info on their debut EP release. They gave the world single 'Heartless' a few weeks ago, a tasty morsel that left people wanting more. The quintet will release their EP entitled 'Pilot' on Friday June 30th and have recently dropped the second single and first videoclip for their track 'Preacher.'

The Sydney-based five-piece have impressively created a sound that entwines post-hardcore riffs and vocals with beautiful melodies and beat-down hooks, throwing a spin on the traditional foundations of everything there is to love about the post-hardcore movement.

Vocalist Julian Latouche says that they are extremely happy with the results of their first outing in the studio. "Preacher' is a good sonic reproduction of who we are as a band as it was one of the first songs written for this EP and it is a good reflection for what's to come in 'Pilot'. The EP tackles a lot of themes about personal growth and understanding but as the EP name suggests we want the audience to gather their own opinions and ideas about what the songs mean to them and interpret them how they please."

On the video shot by Warwick Hughes of Sink Or Swim Productions, Julian says "The visuals of this video for Preacher have the theme of breaking away and finding your self, the self you are proud of and isn’t shadowed by anything."
