Gamma Ray - Hell Yeah!!! The Awesome Foursome Live in Montreal (SPV/Riot)

This release is a great live album; any Gamma Ray fan will no doubt want it!

You know, this band has been around so long and produced so much music that you'd be a bit gone in the head to think that Gamma Ray couldn't pull off their music very well live. Still, it's always interesting hearing live albums.

This release has an amusing title. Not the main title of the release, but the title written in full. It is actually titled: Hell Yeah!!! The Awesome Foursome and the Finnish keyboarder who didn't want to wear his Donald Duck Costume: Live in Montreal. Unfortunately, without liner notes in the promo disc it's impossible to know the story behind it. Well, I could google it but - this is about the release, right?

A double-CD, you get to hear live tracks from past studio albums like 1991's Sigh No More, 1995's Land of the Free, 1997's Somewhere Out In Space, 1999's Power Plant, and so on.

While many bands sound very raw live, Gamma Ray have been playing hard live for so long that they manage to pull off the live sets with total panache. This double-disc also has that wonderful raw sound to it of an album recorded in a large venue; the crowd were excited; the interactions with the crowd were minimal but expressive of excitement; and quite honestly it's a good album.

It also evidently didn't spend a huge amount of time in post-production: this album really does appear to reflect these guys in a live situation - even to the point where you can pick the very, very slight echo of the P.A.

If you're a Gamma Ray fan, you'll want to go and grab this album and, no doubt, the accompanying DVD release. Keep your eye out for a review of that here too.
