Amorphous – A Perfect Evil (Let It Bleed Records/Godz of War Productions)
Amorphous, hailing from Wrocław (Poland) have already released an album and an EP, and now they are back with A Perfect Evil, an album that mixes elements of death metal, grindcore and some groove metal in its concoction.
The band is said to have been active since 1991, although, presumably with some halts and change of formation along the way, but nonetheless they are veterans of their game.
Imagine an amalgamation of Antigama, Sepultura, Napalm Death (the vocals are incredibly like those performed by Barney Greenway) with a perfect equilibrium between these styles with some surprises in the middle.
From grindcore they bring that structure where the song commences immediately after the first riffs of the song, but then the song extends itself until you conclude that the tunes are too long to be considered grindcore. Besides, the tracks are slower than the average Napalm Death/Agathocles kinda thing.
I know it’s a paradox in every direction, but to add insult to injury the songs are extremely well executed and well produced, even though Amorphous not being a technical death metal band, you notice that the musicians are ultra-capable of managing their instruments the way they like best, specially the guitarist Marek Pająk who is possibly too good for the style the band does. This is probably the most versatile axeman in extreme metal, at least in the Polish lands. The guy goes from extremely fickle solos to utterly melodic (another oxymoron for the style) fretwork with a Steve Vai/Joe Satriani feel. If you doubt me, check out the incredible middle session of the second track Deception.. Lie.. Forgivness (sic).
Another interesting example of his talent in is the song The Abyss of Nothingness.
A Perfect Evil is a well done album, with lots of interesting parts that make Amorphous an unique band. They have all that a band dreams to get high scores in the metal game: they're excellent musicians. I hope they continue dealing with music the way the music deserves to be done: with respect, and their name is going to be big very soon.
