Craven Idol - Towards Eschaton (Dark Descent Records)

Some delightful 'evil Satan' musical stylings...

This is Craven Idol's debut album and it's rather fucking good. I'm really embracing these fellows and their blackened thrash/death musings at the moment - and you should too. From the slow build and haunting chants of To Summon Maryion to the strangely familiar Orgies, these fellows don't really take their foot off the pedal for the entire album, and for that I salute them.

There's a goodly sense of the dramatic to the songs on here but Craven Idol have managed to avoid sinking too far into the land of cheese. Take Craven Atonement; an absolutely mentalist track that steers deftly between the rocks of pomp and tomfoolery while dashing your eardrums to pieces with some excellent riffs. It also leads expertly into Codex of Seven Dooms, another solid track that doesn't disappoint. In fact the whole album is a magnificent piece of work, clocking in around the 35 minute mark and thereby not overstaying its welcome with nine minute epic tunes that don't actually have anything to say. The directness of Aura of Undeath will frighten you terribly.

Let yourself be stabbed with the icy dagger of Craven Idol. Not only is Towards Eschaton a banging album but the cover art is a real delight. Check it out, you'll see what I mean.
