Luca Turilli's Rhapsody - Prometheus, Symphonia Ignis Divinus (Nuclear Blast)

Same old same old... in a good way!

Italian Luca Turilli is back with another slab of classically-inflected power metal, choc full of sinister choirs, dazzling musicianship and all-round over the top pomposity; If you’ve followed the man’s career to date, through his days in Rhapsody (Of Fire), onto his solo works and his current take on the Rhapsody imprint, you’ll know what to expect. If you haven’t, well, I guess this is as good a place to start as any…

And that’s basically because Prometheus… sounds exactly the same as everything else that bears the name of the great man. Whether that’s a criticism or an approbation I’ll leave to you to decide – suffice to say if you’re well-disposed to the work of Turilli then there’s plenty here that you’ll find worthy of shaking your air stradivarius to!

If truth be told, there is just a little more than usual here that might be of appeal to the casual listener; First single Rosenkreuz (The Rose and the Cross) is a beguiling tale of Masonic intrigue with a decent melody, whilst the dramatic Il Tempo Degli Dei has a stately air about it and sounds like something Luciano Pavarotti may have been pleased to wrap his tonsils around in his heyday. Closing epic Of Michael the Archangel and Lucifer’s Fall Part II Codex Nemesis (and thank the maker I’m not working to a word limit here!) has an album’s worth of themes on its own, it’s eighteen minute duration being packed with more twists and turns than an Italian Formula One circuit yet never overstaying it’s welcome, whilst the folkier One Ring to Rule Them All has a certain bucolic charm  to it too.

But overall it’s very much fast-digits ahoy! with Prometheus..., pomposity central with an added side of pretension, and whether that appeals to you will be predicated very much by your reaction to Turilli’s wider canon. Me? I’m a glutton for this stuff, so I’m off to immerse myself in the whole thing all over again…
