Night Demon is a three piece from California belting out classic metal stylings; this is their debut full length release after having previously released a self-titled EP in 2013. Curse of the Damned sees Night Demon delivering blistering metal that is in the same ball park to which early Pretty Maids, Helloween and, at times, Manowar encamp.

All the playing is gold, but then you’d expect that from this style of metal, after all slouches don’t get far in the NWOBHM/power metal game. You’ve got to give Night Demon props, for a three piece they deliver a pretty decent wall of sound and make use of space and textures wonderfully, it would be interesting to see if they can deliver that sound live.

This is a good album touching on all the usual heavy metal themes lyrically, want a song about Lucifer you got it (this one’s called Satan), how about one about being a head banger, well ok then, here you go have Heavy Metal Heat. Full Speed Ahead is the fast driving song with its Motorhead like introduction and the murder song is appropriately titled Killer. That’s not to mean lyrically the album is shite. It’s a very good horns up heavy metal album but don’t go digging around for any depth in the concepts highlighted by the tunes, it ain’t going to happen (but fuck we can name a hundred releases this year alone that fall into that category). These guys are pure heavy metal with big sing-a-long choruses and classically dumb metal lyrics.

When I first listened to Curse of the Damned I thought this is something I would dig hearing in the background at a BBQ sinking bevs, but it’s not something I’m going to hit up regularly. But the more I listened to it the more interested I got. It delivers what it sets out to do and the world is a better place for having it. It’s a solid outing with some fine moments but it won’t set the world on fire – and that’s ok, as long as it pays the bills and helps Night Demon to deliver more we’ll all be the richer for it.
