About

Brendan Biryla is my name (pronounced Bur-ril-a) and I’m a Los Angeles based metalhead. (Venice Beach to be exact, which I lovingly call Viking Beach). By day, I work in the tech startup world and by night I’m an EPIC metal warrior and a desperately-trying-to-get-good guitar player. Obviously, I support all forms of heavy metal as I’m sure you do, but I particularly gravitate towards Viking/ folk/ black/ pagan/ power/ melodic death/ pirate/ prog-power and any other derivative heathen metals.

Nearly two years ago when I was living in Hollywood I had the opportunity to establish a small radio program on 99.3FM. The result of that can be found at www.hollywoodmetal.com which is now an online show that I produce out of my apartment in Venice with whichever metalheads want to stop by that week. Recently I began to get the urge to write about metal again. I think that very same day I found @MetalAsFuck on twitter and here I am. Last note before we begin. I’m not a native of Los Angeles so I will not be writing from a position of expertise on LA metal. Rather, I hope to share with you my experiences in assimilating into the scene here and the wisdom imparted upon me by some of the many up and coming bands located in this great city. I have great live videos on my youtube channel: www.youtube.com/hollywoodmetalradio and you can follow me on twitter here: www.twitter.com/BrendanBiryla

SuidAkra - (2009) Crogacht

“what you are about to see is the greatest warrior duel in history. It is also one of the greatest tragedies of all time." -Lugh, Celtic High King of the Distant Past

SuidAkra - Crogacht  [Celtic Metal, Germany, Released March 3rd 2009 in the US]

Out of breath I caught up to Lugh, the Celtic High King of the distant past. Upon a warrior’s grasp of forearms we were teleported to ancient Ireland. Music was playing in the time-warp bubble that contained us. Lugh said, “what you are about to see is the greatest warrior duel in history. It is also one of the greatest tragedies of all time. The music that is playing is from Suidakra. Their latest album ‘Crogacht,’ meaning ‘bravery,’ is the soundtrack to the following events.” Happy and confused all in one instant I watched the battle unfold. I had never seen such skill at arms as the two men before us, just as I had never heard such great riffs as the ones emanating from our time bending sphere. One of the warriors was a bit older than the other, a metaphor, I reasoned, for the struggle between youth and experience. The battle was exhausting to watch but equally as captivating. As the best song of the album “Gilded Oars” rowed along with a churning epic rhythm the young man gained an edge over the older, war-hardened, warrior. In a desperate move to save his life the elder warrior used his foot to launch a spear into his opponent. It was a deadly blow and the younger warrior soon past. Then elder warrior screamed in horror at what he had done. Perplexed, I asked Lugh what was happening. After all, he did what had to be done to save his own life. Lugh returned us to present day and as he turned to leave he said, “the noticed too late that younger wore a familiar gold ring on his finger... it was his son, Conlaoch…”
