Brant Bjork and the Low Desert Punk Band - Black Flower Power (Napalm Records)

Consistently fine stoner groove...
Release Date:

Mr Bjork (and company) have done it again with Black Flower Power, delivering ten tracks of fat stoner groove for your listening pleasure. Don't think - just be and allow Brant's musical magick to whisk you away to all manner of wondrous places where it always gets stuck to 'The Man' and you can always get down. The droning chord work of opener Controllers Destroyed, coupled with some proud bass, will get you bobbing along instantly - and that's the zone you should stay in for the rest of the album. The fuzzy overdrive of We Don't Serve Their Kind and the hypnotic groove of Stokely Up Now (complete with the multiple meanings of "Hey, did you see that? That's a dog. That's a cat." - fucking profound, man!) will have you reaching, and re-reaching for that bong, pipe or spliff again and again. Naturally, you don't have to be off your tits to appreciate this album - but it probably helps...

Raunchy groove is what this album is all about and it's epitomised by Buddha Time (Everything Fine) and the sexy bass of Boogie Woogie On Your Brain and the cheeky rhythms of Ain't No Runnin' - Brant just does his thing and if you want to come along for the ride, well; you're more than welcome to tag along. I'd advise that you do.

Porno wah-wah gets a good outing with That's A Fact Jack (a personal favourite, along with Stokely Up Now) and the entire album is drenched in a suitably low-fi, analogue, down and dirty production that one comes to expect from anything that Brant lays his hand to. There's a lovely warmth to his production values (and having seen him live a few times, I can vouch for the fact that he's able to pull this shit off exceedingly well in the flesh).

Last two tracks Hustler's Blues (a slow, roaming number that picks up the pace as it progresses) and Where You From Man (an almost groovish early Sabbath kind of tune with all manner of delayed vocal and trippy fun) finish the album in an impeccable fashion. Get this. Get down. Oooh yer...
