Nummirock is held over the crucial Finnish Juhannas holiday. Metalheads from all over head to the serene lakeside venue to set up camp and cry havoc for the long weekend. It's bugs, beer and bonfires. It's sauna with new friends, sauna with old friends and naked drunks wandering the campsites. It's moshpits, metal and most importantly, it's Midsummer. The opening evening was filled with Deals Death (SWE), Profane Omen (FIN), Speedtrap (FIN) and Kaunis Kuolematon (FIN).

It's moshpits, metal and most importantly, it's Midsummer. The second day came in with sullen morning trips for hair of the dog, but we caught the brilliant live shows of (in performance order) Kuolemanlaakso, Medeia, Wolfheart, Mokoma, Mörbid Vomit, Stam1na, The Black Dahlia Murder, Behemoth and Sacrilegious Impalement!

The last day of the festival swept in cold and damp, but that didn't deter the thousands from drinking and live music! It had our photographer hiding in the warmer drinking areas, but we've got live shots from Stone, Turisas, Turmion Kätilöt, W.A.S.P., Whispered, Suicide Silence and Tuoni!
For the first time since 2012, Moonsorrow played their home crowd in Helsinki and days later words are still failing me when I attempt to describe the night. The longest set ever, fans from all over the world, and the long brilliance of Tulimyrsky. 1065: Aika was played for the first time in Finland. It was also the first time a lot of people saw Crimfall live with their new female vocalist, Sara Strömmer.

After over thirty years of gigs, Newcastle's Satan finally made it to Finland to a reception they never expected. The downstairs of the inner-Helsinki PRKL bar was packed with fans full of sheer violent passion in finally seeing Satan play live in their hometown.
Friday night calls for beers, and last Friday night delivered that with a good dose of local Helsinki metal at the PRKL club in Helsinki. Headlining was Magenta Harvest, with Ceaseless Torment and Enthring. The Finns may have long dark winters, but it makes for solid tunes.
A haunting combination of folk, electronica and funeral-doom, Kauan's Pirut is best listened to as one continuous song.
